Thank you for requesting information regarding California’s Proposition 65 (“Prop 65”) in regards to food products sold by Ikeda Tea World.

Proposition 65 is California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Businesses must place a warning on any product sold within the state of California containing a substance on the Prop 65 chemical list that is present above a very low threshold and cannot be proven to be naturally occurring. This is the same warning posted in cafes, restaurants, and other businesses throughout the state of California. There are currently over 900 substances on the list, including many naturally occurring minerals present in soil and water that can be absorbed in small amounts by plants. The Prop 65 limits for lead are particularly strict, with the value set at 0.5 micrograms/day, which is 1000 times lower than the level known to have “no observable effect” on human health. The process of industrialization worldwide has introduced lead and other substances into the environment, making it extremely difficult to prove that all minerals found in foods are naturally occurring. Some foods require a warning under Prop 65 even if they are in compliance with Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.

Ikeda’s products have not been adulterated and no lead or heavy metals of any kind have been artificially added. Safety and quality have always been our top priority. Ikeda’s products and manufacturing process are certified by the world’s leading food safety regulators including FSCC22000, Kosher OU, the Non-GMO Project and many of our teas are certified USDA organic. The new Prop 65 requirements have not changed or affected the integrity or quality of any Ikeda products. We retain the same dedication to the safety of our teas, the farming and manufacturing process, and to the community.

Ikeda acknowledges that lead is found in trace amounts in our matcha products and is of “no significant risk” as detailed in Prop 65. However, depending on the Buyer’s formulation and serving size, the Buyer’s final product may exceed the limits allowed by California law. Each company should consult a Prop 65 specialist before bringing products to market in the state of California.

Ikeda regularly tests the safety and quality of our bulk matcha and other green teas. For specific questions please contact your sales representative or info@ikedamatcha.com. We are happy to provide additional information about our safety and quality control measures.
