Japanese Hojicha Tea

Hōjicha powder derives from the same Camellia sinensis plant that is used to produce green tea. The leaves used for Hojicha tea are harvested later in the season (also known as Bancha) and include the stems and stalks of the green tea plant. The mixture is roasted in a spinning clay drum, giving this roasted green tea an earthy flavor and reddish brown color.

Benefits of Hojicha Powder

Healthy & Flavorful

Hojicha roasted green tea maintains a moderate level of antioxidants and catechins, which can help lower the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and helps naturally reduce cholesterol levels. Its low caffeine content creates a smoother and calmer experience compared to other green teas.

A Versatile Tea

The roasting process makes Houjicha green tea less astringent and decreases its caffeine content, making it a good matcha alternative and a perfect after dinner tea. Its nutty, caramel-like flavor pairs well with many ingredients and has made Hojicha powder famous in the international culinary market.

Expanding Markets

Interest in Hojicha beverages continues to grow in countries like Singapore and London. With products like Hojicha tea latte, Hojicha ice cream, Hojicha chiffon cake, and Hojicha cocktails, this unique green tea is drawing the attention of the tea industry. In Japan alone, the bulk Hojicha market increased 16 times its value from 2005 to 2016.
