Sencha and Matcha Differences

While both green teas come from the same Camellia Sinensis plant, they differ in the way they are grown and produced. Organic Sencha is grown in the sunlight and never shaded, increasing its levels of catechins, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. While matcha is the green tea leaf in powdered form, Japanese Sencha is the steamed, dried and rolled green tea leaf, infused in hot water like a traditional loose leaf tea. The flavor profiles between matcha and sencha are as distinct as their texture and aroma.

Sencha Health Benefits

Sencha's growing process is key to multiplying its levels of antioxidants, which support healthy cells and a robust immune system. Studies have also linked sencha to increased cognitive activity, reduced blood pressure and boosted metabolism. While Sencha green tea has lower caffeine levels compared to matcha, it quickly makes up for this with its balanced blend of L-theanine, folic acid, beta-carotene, calcium,  potassium, and phosphorus.

Growing Sencha

Rising demand for clean labels and health-conscious products free of artificial flavors and sweeteners have given Sencha a rise in popularity outside of Japan, the world's leading sencha consumer. Global beverage trends show growing interest in sencha tea; particularly among younger, health-conscious millennials in search for natural and organic ingredients with less sugar and a superfood status. Ikeda specializes in producing organic Japanese sencha from our farm in Kagoshima.
